Burton W. Patterson

Rape Prevention Education Coordinator

(317) 624-2370

Born and raised in Chicago, IL, Burton has a background in Social Work and now likes to refer to himself as an adopted Hoosier. In 2005, Burton earned a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. Burton began his professional career by providing case management and counseling services to young adults who were wards of the state of Illinois, and who struggled with mental illness and childhood trauma. That work lead him to work in a residential setting, providing case management and counseling services to adults who were affected by mental illness, addiction and homelessness. Working with such vulnerable populations fueled Burton’s passion for social justice, using his voice for those who were made to feel disempowered. The experience of working in both secondary and tertiary prevention, as well as seeing the long-term effects of childhood trauma and sexual assault, lead Burton to think about a career path that focused more on primary prevention. He wanted to get out in front of social injustice to prevent them from ever happening. Upon moving to Indianapolis in 2014, Burton was offered the opportunity to launch and spear head an anti-bullying program called Step Up for Kindness!TM Burton began traveling around the state of Indiana and facilitating bullying prevention and healthy relationships programming to students in Kindergarten through 8th grade. In almost 3 years he was able to teach over 35,000 students. In addition, he further developed previously written curricula while assisting in a year-long research study that accredited the program as evidence based, presented research at the International Bullying Prevention Conference, and developed the program to become locally renowned in the social health sector. Motivated by a desire to see more men use their voice in areas where they can truly have a positive impact and bring about change, Burton joined the ICESA team as the Rape Prevention and Education Coordinator. In this role, Burton will focus on the primary prevention of sexual assault  with a primary focus on the engagement and education of male college students on the college campus. Burton is excited to be part of such a passionate, driven and dynamic team!
